January 2007. An inch of ice accumulated over a 2 day period, and it was another day before we started to thaw out. Three Rufous Hummingbirds and hundreds of Chipping Sparrows were among the feathered friends that stayed nearby for the duration. The
Chipping Sparrows gathered under the vehicles in the carport--one of the few places that wasn't covered with ice. I changed hummingbird feeders out every 3-4 hours; between freezing rain icing up the feeding ports and air temperature cold enough to freeze the sugar water, it was a challenge to keep the
feeders available.
